Before you Enlist for Military Service by Joseph D. Meheski, Jr.

"OH SAY can DID YOU SEE by the dawns early light ALL THAT THE MILITARY RECRUITER COULD NEVER TELL THEE?"

                                                                   by Joseph D. Meheski, Jr.

                                                           Description:

A "Guide to assist in educating a prospective Military enlistee Before enlisting". Most importantly to encourage dialogue among the prospective Recruit/Family/Friends and Significant people in their lives. Have discussed with several newspapers and submitted an article for publication. Have had several op-eds published and now with increasing military campaigns and horrors of Iraq, etc., I feel compelled to assist anyone contemplating joining the Military, just so that they enter as prepared as one can be for boot camp/life after Discharge. I hope this Booklet accomplishes its objective, i.e., to prepare one for Enlistment with Eyes Wide Open. Also, to serve as a very significant point of reference should one be an unfortunate casualty of War.

NOTE VIEWS EXPRESSED ARE JOE MEHESKI’S AND DO NOT REPRESENT VIEWS OF VVA CHAPTER 899.

Many Members may have seen this AD in several sources and are familiar with some of the articles Joe Meheski has authored and I posted on our former web site.

I have asked Joe if he would consider having his Draft Recruitment Booklet posted on the revised site and discussed with Joe the opportunity to submit articles that he feels may be of interest to Members.

Joe has agreed and at this time Joe’s Page is considered UNDER CONSTRUCTION.  Until Joe has addressed some outstanding issues, the above AD and excerpt from the LULU website where his publication may be purchased will be posted.  Joe intends to donate a portion of proceeds to the Chapter.  As an aside, in the interest of just helping prospective recruits, Joe posted the entire Booklet under the Summary page for nearly 6 months allowing anyone to just download it for nothing.  Now with the Draft being made available through the Chapter site, the Booklet One Page Summary (click on “Preview this brochure”) can be reviewed at:   www.lulu.com/content/488078

Either click on the caption Summary (Joseph D. Meheski, Jr.) from the site at the top of the page or on the blue URL in the previous paragraph and it will be take you right to the Booklet on the LULU site.

Joe will be uploading a copy of the Cover Page of the Booklet, on this page in the near future, but for now, please click on the areas as noted (The AD was in the Times and is now in “OUR TOWN”).

Judging from his past articles I would like to afford Joe the opportunity to further share his views on various topics as he has done in the past with his letters to the Editor on the Fort Dix Flag Lowering Ceremonies and his work on getting our Chapter National recognition through the Letter to the Editor in THE VVA VETERAN, among other writings he has completed.  Once the site is fully operational, FEEDBACK not only will be WELCOME, but IS MOST DESIRABLE to ensure Members and non-members find some topics of interest, worthy of evaluation and commentary.

                                                          TOPIC INDEX

                                               (As Of February 20, 2008)

SINCE I HAVE POSTED A NUMBER OF ARTICLES RECENTLY, I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE HELPFUL TO PROVIDE AN INDEX OF TOPICS TO ENABLE THE READER TO GO DIRECTLY TO AN AREA OF INTEREST IF SO DESIRED:

1. RECRUITMENT BOOKLET: SUMMARY ABOVE; EXCERPT AND BACKGROUND.

2. VETERANS, IT IS TIME TO UNITE (This has been moved to the beginning due to my belief that it is of major significance as a concept in this election year and the future.

2A. Some thoughts relative to O'Reilly show on 5/2/08, Re: Soldier's Treatment of Injuries sustained in IRAQ.

3. BERKELEY: E-MAIL EXCHANGES BASED UPON E-MAIL I RECEIVED FROM BRUCE CARPENTER, JUDGE ADVOCATE OF THE TRENTON DETACHMENT MARINE CORPS LEAGUE, INC.--NEWEST MATERIAL TO MY ORIGINAL RESPONSE TO BERKELEY UNIVERSITY.

4.  BERKELEY, DOUBLE STANDARD--DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO.

VETERANS, IT IS TIME TO UNITE

I attempt to find some positives in negative events, and one thing the Berkeley Debacle has really convinced me is that it is time for ALL VETERANS TO UNITE!  This is an advance on the Chapter I have in my Book that is underway.  Wouldn't you agree there is power in Numbers?  I hear it from the Disabled American Veterans all the time.  The aforementioned idea is certainly not new, but it is long overdue.

I am proposing that a VETERANS' COMMISSION (VC) with EACH Veteran Organization's Lead Person/Head being a member and collectively the group electing a lead person be established.  My take is that it would

1.   Establish a CHARTER with each Member speaking for His/Her Organization;

2.   Become a Voting Block that each candidate would take seriously-it is an election year, what better time to put this in motion;

3.   Having a VETERANS' COMMISSION would hopefully tear down the barriers among the organizations, such as the felling that, and I honestly heard this remark from a WWII Veteran, the Vietnam Veterans were a bunch of potheads that is why the casualty rate was so high....  That of course is one WWII Vet's take, but disturbing none-the-less.

4.   Provide for a Mega-Phone Voice when it comes to treatment of Veterans by the Veteran's Administration and other members of the Bureaucracy;

5.   Plus, most importantly, buttress the FACT that VETERANS are ALL MILITARY ALUMNI and in numbers can be Recognized as Patriots that do what is needed to protect the Rights to Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness in a Free Society.

My aforementioned thoughts are just that, THOUGHTS placed on the table for all to consider.  Perhaps one already exists.  Am I being foolish and NAIVE? If so, then so be it.  I believe in speaking out and asking questions, rather than sitting in the corner and letting others decide my fate and the fate of my Family/Country.  Comments are certainly welcome, and if you feel I need treatment, I am already receiving it, but I am sure I could use more...

(FEBRUARY 24, 2008)

(2. A. MY TAKE ON INTERVIEW WITH WIFE OF WOUNDED WARRIOR RETURNED FROM IRAQ: I watched with amazement, but not disbelief, when my wife called me to watch an interview with the wife of a Soldier wounded in Iraq from an IED--he lost an arm, severe brain injuries, shrapnel all over, etc., and HIS WIFE HAD TO DO ALL THE QUESTION ASKING TO DETERMINE WHAT TREATMENT COULD BE PROVIDED AND HOW TO GO ABOUT GETTING IT.  In essentially her own words, " I had to ask the right questions, and I feel sorry for those Veterans out there that just do not know where to turn."  Nothing was offerred to her in the way of options for treatment, she had to do all the homework.  What has the VETERANS SYSTEM / CONGRESS done with all the Recommendations from the Veterans Commission Report?  What does it take to get these POLITICIANS off their PODIUMS AND PUT WORDS INTO ACTION.  Any would be prospective recruite, as I state in my Recruitment Booklet, for those unfortunate to be a Casualty of War, the Battle doesn't end if you are fortunate to make it home, the REAL BATTLE begins at HOME with an ANTIQUATED SYSTEM AND ANTIQUATED THINKING OF THE PURPORTED CARETAKERS.  HEY, THERE ARE GOOD PEOPLE IN ANY BASKET OF BAD APPLES, BUT NOT MANY.  I HOPE SOME CONGRESSMAN OR SENATOR WATCHED THE PROGRAM, BUT HEY, THAT IS WISHFUL THINKING AND EXPECTATIONS WOULD BE TOO MUCH TO HOPE FOR, I.E., CORRECTIVE, PRACTICAL, COMMON SENSE ACTION!)

======================================================================

Heard about the Berkeley debacle?  I will start with the last e-mail I received from the Group that Stood-Up and said ENOUGH!  It kind of brings back memories of Vietnam from the same “INTELLECTUALS”.  As you progress you will get to my initial e-mail response when I was informed of this travesty from my friend at the Marine Corps League, Judge Advocate, Bruce Carpenter.  Regarding any donations, that is your prerogative and I am merely passing along updates of the disgusting mess.  Please do what you believe is best for you.  I am not endorsing or proposing anyone endorse the candidate mentioned.  Again, passing along information that just does not seen believable in AMERICA!

ENJOY!

Move America Forward is proud to unveil our brand-new TV ad that fights back against the Berkeley City Council's campaign against our military.

Watch the ad, share it with others - please time is of the essence, and we must get this passed around the Internet ASAP!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMEWflz-L8I

We begin airing the ad on the television airwaves next week. So we have between now and then to raise as much money as possible to purchase airtime for the ads - they'll run nationwide (but we need financial support to get them seen enough times!)

Berkeley to Face More Heat!

As you know, the Berkeley City Council has refused to apologize to the Marines and this nation for calling the men and women of the United States Marine Corps, "uninvited and unwelcome intruders."

They've not apologized for calling upon the residents of Berkeley to impede the work of all military recruiters, and in fact have actually had the nerve to reiterate that request!  Despicable!

The Berkeley City Council has not apologized for Councilmember Dona Spring's declaration that she saw the Marine's as representing:  "death and destruction and killing and maiming for my whole life and I'm tired of it."

And Mayor Tom Bates stands by his anti-military assertion about the Marines that, "they don't belong here, they shouldn't have come here, they should leave."

The tens of thousands of you who have spoken out against the Berkeley City Council have touched us at Move America Forward, and we are going to step up our efforts to fight back against the Berkeley City Council.

We have already secretly begun work on a TV ad campaign that will keep the heat on Berkeley until they formally apologize and call off the pit bull anti-military groups like Code Pink and International ANSWER that they have told to harass the Marines.

To make this ad campaign successful - in part to make sure no other city in America thinks it is acceptable to repeat Berkeley's actions - we will need to run A GREAT MANY television ads, so as to get our message heard far and wide.

We ask that you make a contribution to this effort online here:

To all of our friends and supporters at Move America Forward:

On Friday afternoon we will be publishing a comprehensive report on what happened in Berkeley, California on Tuesday - when thousands of you joined together to tell the Berkeley City Council that we would not tolerate their attacks against our military men and women.

You'll be able to find the report on our website:

http://www.MoveAmericaForward.org

Suffice it to say - it was a day where TV news helicopters hovered in the skies, more than 2,000 people (according to media reports) protested in the streets, and the outrage grew so large that Alvita King (niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.) was on the phone with one of our supporters counseling her on how to best protest the egregious actions of the city of Berkeley.

The anti-military activists who had worked with the City of Berkley to first pass the anti-Marine resolution burned multiple U.S. flags that day. What was most offensive is that they were flags that they had stolen from Move America Forward's booths. Apparently there's a shortage of U.S. flags left to burn in Berkeley, CA.

In one instance their pyrotechnics got so carried away that they burned down a sign for "Peace Wall" while trying to burn a U.S. flag.

These people are disgusting. We don't say that lightly, for while we may disagree with those in the anti-war movement, we know that many of them are simply misguided or naive.

But no, these people who worked with the Berkeley City Council Peace & Justice Commission are disgusting, vile, people. In Berkeley, the virulent anti-military radicals are not just activists, they part of the local government.

At the end of the day, a majority of the City Council expressed apologies for their misguided actions. The problem is, of the contingent willing to admit they were wrong there was not agreement on who to apologize to - some said apologize to the troops, another said apologize to the citizens of Berkeley, and one even said to apologize to pro-troop organizations who found that Berkeley had given preferential Free Speech rights to Code Pink over other groups with "less popular" views.

As one of our Move America Forward supporters said:

They couldn't get a majority to agree on WHAT SPECIFICALLY they screwed up on, but they knew that they had made a disgrace out of Berkeley, and you know what -- in an odd way they managed to unite this country behind our troops at a time when the Code Pink crowd are trying to undermine support for the troops.

Again - tomorrow afternoon Pacific time (that's in the evening for you folks on the East Coast) we'll have a complete update to the Move America Forward website.

A giant THANK YOU to all of our supporters who came and joined us for part of the all-day, all-night affair, or who wrote emails to the City Council, or who made donations to help pay for the entire effort.

You've all made history: you got the Berkeley City Council to back down from attacks on our troops at a time of war - amazing work, everyone!

Subject: The Marines Fight for Us, Let's Fight for Them

Dear Fellow Conservative,

The City Council of Berkeley last week voted to ask the U.S. Marine Corps to vacate their recruiting office in town, and that if they chose to stay they did so as "uninvited and unwelcome intruders." Berkeley also voted to give the radical liberal group Code Pink a parking space to protest the Marine Corps and urged them to "impede, passively or actively" the work of Marine Corps recruiters.

During debate of the resolution, one council member called the Marines "the President's own gangsters" and "trained killers." Another said the Marines had given the country "horrible karma" and said they had a history of "death and destruction." In a document drafted to support the resolution against the Marines, the council stated: "Military recruiters are sales people known to lie to and seduce minors and young adults into contracting themselves into military service with false promises regarding jobs, job training, education and other benefits."

I do not believe a city that has turned its back on our country's finest deserves $2 million worth of pork-barrel projects. This week I introduced the Semper Fi Act of 2008. The bill would rescind over $2 million in hidden earmarks for Berkeley, California in the 2008 Omnibus Appropriations bill, and transfer the funds to the Marine Corps But I need your help.

I'm currently working with MoveAmericaFoward.org to petition members of Congress to support the Semper Fi Act of 2008. Here are five ways you can help:

Meanwhile, the Marines will continue to bring peace, security, and freedom to the citizens of Berkeley, whether they like it or not. There is a well known slogan outside the Marine Air Base in Beaufort, SC warning passersby of the jets' loud noises. The slogan says, "The noise you hear is the sound of freedom."

The irony is the Marines are glad to do it and that is why most Americans are so proud of them. The Marines risk so much fighting for us, now it's time us to fight for them.

Sincerely,

Senator Jim DeMint

P.S. We can strengthen America. Change begins with you, so please get involved today and sign the petition at www.MoveAmericaFoward.org.

Update from the Huge Event in Berkeley!

Friends, by the time you read this email our team from Move America Forward will have begun to arrive for our all-day pushback against the Berkeley City Council and their attacks on our troops here in America.

We already have learned that Code Pink is trying to pitch tents in the area that has been permitted to us for our pro-troop demonstration and anti-Berkeley City Council protests.  It's going to be an interesting day in Berkeley, and we at Move America Forward will not back down - we stand with our troops, and we will not allow them to be dishonored, insulted or attacked, especially by an American governmental body!

We will be posting updates all throughout the day with pictures and first-hand reports at our website:  http://www.MoveAmericaForward.org

There's one way for those of you who cannot be physically with us to support our efforts - by making a donation to help pay for all the expenses we've incurred putting on this pushback.  We may also need funds for legal bills should we have to challenge any of the actions by the Berkeley City Council and their allies with Code Pink.

Please make a contribution here - no matter if as little as $10 or $25 or as large as $500 or $5,000.  All donations are tax-deductible, there are no contribution limits, and corporate contributions ARE allowed:

I completed the protest form and feel that they should all be cut off from any Federal Funding, I believe that may be already a consideration, and that they each acknowledge how many of those intellectuals have family that ever even fought in any conflict and any that have anyone currently serving in the Military.

They should indeed be classified as Guilty of TREASON for Slandering the very Force that allows them to express their views in such a distasteful and blatant ignorant manner.  And these are our Professors, our most intelligent human scum....

BERKELEY, DOUBLE STANDARD--DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO?

Rather than going into a lengthy discourse on the inconsistency of Berkeley's ethics guidelines, suffice is to say that perhaps the board should take some time to refresh themselves on what Berkeley espouses and then contrast it with what Berkeley actually does. Kind of ironic that there is quite a bit of inconsistency when one compares the:

"Faculty Code of Conduct

and Disciplinary Procedures for the Berkeley Campus

As approved by the Assembly of the Academic Senate, the Faculty Code of Conduct is

set forth in APM - 015 as follows:...."

and the behavior of its professors that sit on the Berkeley Board. Google the title and read the pdf file for yourself. Of course, I am not a Berkeley graduate so I am sure my interpretation would be too beneath the elitist Board that treats its alumnus/alumni/students with their ruling as to what constitutes "free speech" and what a Berkeley student should be listening to, as apparently the students can not decide for themselves. Is Berkeley a grade school? Moreover, since they are so above the idea that History has proven the value of the Military/Marine Corps, why is it that they should accept Federal Grants, my taxpayer money to fund what they feel it important-it seems judging from the comments of the Board regarding the Marine Corps, the Faculty could use a refresher course in History. But again, I am sure I have the wrong interpretation of things and could not possibly understand the high level thinking that the institution purports to engender in its students.

Moreover, I wish that one of the Board Members would understand that in my opinion no Marine/Soldier or anyone in the Military takes enjoyment in WAR (of course there are exceptions, I'll leave that to the reader) and also, get over the idea that a WAR is supposed to be fought Hollywood Style.
For me, this is my last comment on the Berkeley Situation--I hope the Berkeley posts were of some value.

Thanks for e-mailing this most pertinent information.  It totally confirms at least for me and I am sure others, the DVA's total disregard for their purported Mission and reveal it's real Mission-to ensure that the minimum amount of Awards are issued to deserving Veterans.

This is a slap in the face to everyone who has served and looked to be supported by its County when support was needed.  In my opinion it speaks volumes to the Cover of my Recruitment publication and the Book I am working on but because of disgusting nonsense like this distorted thinking, I have been frustrated in continuing I guess due to my "Adjustment Disorder" in reconciling the services I receive from the VA with what my Private Physician has done for me-I guess I just have to get my head on straight, kind of a failure to communicate (Cool Hand Luke movie).

I could go on and on with a rant, but this information further confirms my contention that separate we are easy targets to push aside, United as I suggest in my "Joe's Marine Corps Page" remarks about uniting Vets under a Commission, it would be much more difficult for now this finally insider confirmation of the true mindset of the VA service credo, to remain as Business As Usual.

Certainly, there are some Great personnel at the VA Hospitals as is the case in any organization, but this cavalier attitude relative to my sleepless nights and tribulations in trying to view war time materials or deal with them, is certainly not what I believed I would be up against from the System when I enlisted-hence once again my cover with the handshake that is just that, a handshake, welcome aboard and remember it will be up to you to fend for yourself....

Hey, but what do I know, I am just a "Disgruntled Vet", trying to join, "....more and more compensation seeking vets...." (part of quote from article).

Thanks,

Joe

VA is advising their Psychiatrists to call PTSD "Adjustment Disorder"????

 SOURCE

      ========================================================================

DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT SPEAK FOR OR IMPLY THAT VVA899,
MY FAMILY, OR MY FRIENDS/FORMER & REMAINING, AGREE WITH ME

SOME THOUGHTS/MY TAKE....ON:

"OH, WHAT DO WE DO..."???

Back in the day, President John F. Kennedy made a statement that I feel had very extensive repercussions on those that had a vision of the world beyond their own self interests-"Ask not what your Country can do for You, ask what You can do for Your Country".  I hear so much from "those in the know" about how bad things are in this Country and oh, what are we to do....   I have a suggestion that many would like to state, but it would not be politically correct.  I believe I have Freedom of Speech and so I would like to offer my opinion on what this Country should do, especially in light of the VA's antics relative to treatment of PTSD-seems they embraced the first part of President Kennedy's challenge, as evidenced by the suggested treatment of those suffering from PTSD, oh I'm sorry, "Adjustment Disorder".  Also, Congressman Holt's celebration of the 60th anniversary of the creation of Israel-reason I reference Israel is that if I am not mistaken, it is required that every youth serve some time in the military and that means everyone-kind of responds to the second part of JFK's statement.

My Answer to things, Reinstitute the DRAFT.  Why?  It would proportionately spread the responsibility/what one can do around, not that I am a masochist, or have any desire to wish harm on anyone.  However, if we are at WAR, then why are only a few forced to carry the load?  Those protesting would find out first hand what it is like to be on the front lines; those Well To Do/ME FIRST arm chair authorities would have to get up and do something; those VA reviewers would understand the Mission Statement of where they are employed and why; and I feel that this WAR would somehow come to closure rather quickly when everyone gets Greetings to Stand-Up and Give Back what they forget allows this Country to remain Free and Raises Cain with Congress/Senate.

I'm sure that I will be viewed as deranged, and I guess I am, I have difficulty contending with WAR topics and WAR material from my personal experiences that I would not wish on anyone-I find it hard to adjust....  But if we and I say WE are at WAR, then WE means all eligible candidates would need to step up (including Immigrants & Berkeley Students).  I know there would be fear of Possibly No more Frat Parties, wondering what to do with one's time; Possibly no more Gang families; Possibly no Obesity issues; no taking guns to school, etc., and I believe, likely a swift end to the conflict (WAR) -"Not my Son or Daughter...."

Do I say this tongue in cheek, somewhat, do I believe it will actually happen, about as much as the Saudi's raising oil production any time soon, but do I believe it needs to be said, YES.
